The Dallas Cowboys were not the original Cowboys of the NFL. In 1924 a team out of Kansas City named the Blues and featuring a future Hall of Fame lineman named Steve Owen struggled to win 2 games. In 1925 the Blues were renamed to the Cowboys. Due to lack of funding and a facility to play he Cowboys played every game in 1925 on the road. After winning the opener over the Kelleys in Duluth, MN, the Cowboys went winless until the final game of the season, when they defeated the Cleveland Bulldogs 17-0 to finish the season 2-5-1.
The Cowboys continued their strange schedule in 1926, playing their first 6 games on the road before finally securing the rights to play at a home field in Kansas City. In a span of two seasons the Cowboys played 17 straight road games before finally returning home to play. After winning just 1 of the first 4 games in 1926, the Cowboys went on to win 7 in a row including their 2 home games to finish the season 4th in a 22 team league.
After the end of the 1926 season, the NFL contracted to only 12 teams and the Kansas City Cowboys failed to make the cut. The Cowboys name would go unused for another 34 years until an expansion team in Dallas assumed the name. The rest as they say, is history.
