Herschel Walker Dallas Cowboy football cards
Herschel Walker, RB from the University of Georgia, won the 1982 Heisman Trophy award as a Junior. He came out of school early and signed with the USFL's New Jersey Generals in 1983. The Dallas Cowboys selected Herschel in the 5th round of the 1985 NFL draft on the likely chance that he may some day want to play in the NFL. This single move by Tom Landry and Tex Schramm does not get enough credit for the Cowboys Super Bowl run in the early 90's but without this selection it is unlikely the Cowboys win 3 Super Bowls under the new Jimmy Johnson/Jerry Jones era. The USFL folded in 1986 and Herschel became a Dallas Cowboy. He split time with Hall of Fame RB Tony Dorsett his first 2 seasons and when Dorsett was traded to the Broncos in 1988, Herschel became a single set back and rushed for a NFL career high, 1,514 yards. In 1989, the Cowboys new ownership, traded Herschel Walker to the Minnesota Vikings for several draft picks, including 2 #1's and a few players. This trade paved the way for the Cowboys to become the team of the 90's. Although Herschel did not lead the Vikings to a Super Bowl, he was a great back in Minnesota's rotating RB offense. After 3 seasons in Minnesota, Herschel signed with the Philadelphia Eagles and enjoyed his best season as a Pro since 1988 by rushing for over 1,000 yards. Herschel spent 3 seasons in Philly and then one in New York with the Giants before returned to where it all started, Dallas. Herschel played his final 2 seasons as a Pro in Dallas with the Cowboys as a kick return specialist and 3rd down back. Herschel retired after the 1997 season as one of the most versatile players of all time. Herschel gained over 8,000 yards rushing in the NFL, over 4,800 yards receiving and over 5,000 kickoff return yards.
