Mike Jenkins, cornerback from South Florida University, was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the first round of the 2008 NFL draft. The Dallas Cowboys grabbed one of the nation's premier shutdown cornerbacks when they drafted Mike Jenkins with their second pick in the first round (25th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft. Jenkins will be another key piece to the Cowboys defensive backfield and will team with a pair of experienced veterans in Pro Bowler Terence Newman and Anthony Henry. Was a first-team All-America selection by the American Football Coaches Association and second-team by Rivals.com. Earned All-Big East first-team honors and was invited to play in the Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine Game. Was a finalist for the Thorpe Award, finishing with career-highs in tackles (41), interceptions (three) and tackles for losses (four) to go along with 12 pass breakups. Started all 13 games at right cornerback and was part of a secondary that was eighth in the nation in pass efficiency defense and 34th in pass defense (212.1 yards-per-game). Took over kickoff return duties late in the season and returned his first kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown - against Cincinnati - to tie a Big East record and set a USF single-game record with 192 kickoff return yards. Opened the season against Elon College with four pass deflections, four solo tackles and a pair of stops behind the line of scrimmage. Notched a season-best six tackles, including one for a loss, with an interception against Central Florida. Started 12 of the 13 games he played, missing a start in the bowl game, and led the team with a career-high 15 pass breakups. Added 27 tackles, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery to be ranked the 19th-best cornerback in the nation by The Sporting News. Had season-bests with four tackles and three breakups in a win at Central Florida. Had three breakups in the Papajohns.com Bowl win over East Carolina. Was a second-team All-Big East selection, starting all 12 games at right cornerback. Had 38 tackles, two interceptions - in back-to-back wins - two forced fumbles and five pass breakups. Part of a secondary that helped the defense rank sixth in the nation in pass defense (165.4 yards-per-game). Logged a season-high six tackles at Pittsburgh and against Cincinnati. Closed the season with a tackle and a deflection against North Carolina State in the Meineke Car Care Bowl. Played in 10-of-11 games with three starts at left cornerback but was slowed through the season by an ankle injury. Spent most of his time at cornerback with spot duty at safety, finishing with 27 tackles, nine pass breakups and two forced fumbles. Blocked and recovered his first career punt in the season opener against Tennessee Tech. Logged a season-best five tackles at Cincinnati. Was a standout safety, earning SuperPrep All-America honors as a senior at Bradenton, Fla., Southeast High School. Also played running back and led the team with 859 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2002.
